Google Mail For Mobile Phones
With the introduction of fast Internet connections for the majority of new mobile phones (either through 3G networks or wireless LANs) application providers such as Google are working hard to develop mobile versions of their current online offerings. Google Mail has recently been released to allow users to connect and read their email wherever and whenever. Many people already have a Google user account set up which not only allows you to access email on the Internet but will allow you access to applications such as Adwords, Analytics, Webmaster Tools and much more. This Google user account can now be used to log in to you email through your mobile phone. As usual Google keeps it simple. There is a single fast application download which will install Google Mail on your mobile phone and adds a launch icon to a relevant location within your mobile phone menu. As soon as you launch the application you are taken instantly to your email Inbox which displays all your latest emails. By clicking on one of the emails in the list you open the email in your mobile window which you can then read by using the scroll button. There is a menu which gives you all your options such as reply, delete, archive and everything you would expect from an email client. You can also use this menu to navigate to other folders such as starred or sent items. The compose window is again simple and clear. You are offered a ‘To’ text box which allows you to enter a recipient or search through your contacts. All you have to do then is add a subject title, write your email in the area provided and then use the actions menu to send. Links within emails are preserved and this allows you to click through to websites and view them in you mobile phones web browser. One thing that the mobile version of Google Mail does currently not allow you to do is create your own folders for storing emails, though it does display the starred folder and folders you may have created within the original online version. Images are stripped out of the emails to allow them to fit within your mobile phone window and a general problem with mobile phone emailing and web browsing is that it is still a lot slower typing using a mobile keyboard compared to a normal PC. All in all it looks like Google have done it again. They have taken something that everyone else tries to overcomplicate by adding all fancy features and have kept it simple. The interface takes what is necessary and presents the email client in a clinical user friendly manner. Web mail has become a lot more popular in recent times with the introduction of unlimited server space, the development of this and other mobile email clients will only further enhance the usability and popularity of these applications. Rivals Yahoo! should take a leaf out of Googles book and stop trying to pack everything into a single application. What’s relevant to one person is not always relevant to another, not everyone wants news, maps or to search the Internet via their mobile. Yahoo! packs all these into their mobile phone email application and overcomplicates the user interface slowing down email access time. Google mail gets a big thumbs up and we highly (if you have not already) creating a Google user account and downloading this application for your mobile phone so that you too can access your email on the move.

The Nokia N70 – Smarter Than Average
Although it’s over a year old now, the Nokia N70 mobile phone is still more than able to hold its own with newer phones on the market, whether they’re from its parent company or other manufacturers. Part of Nokia’s ‘Smartphone’ series, it was one of the first pieces of kit to introduce many features that are now standard today, yet also keep both its looks and style that Nokia have become famous for. Although it’s still a reasonably small phone size-wise, the N70 packs more than its fair share of punches in its features. The Smartphone name comes from the all-round versatility that Nokia introduced to the UK market, and allows a mobile phone to almost be like a mini-computer, with internal memory and multimedia options. The N70, with its 3G capability, offers this and more. With 3G, not only can you expect better quality video features on your mobile phone, but still use other features at the same time, so in essence you can make a call while downloading a movie or music file. Following on from the hugely popular 6600 series of mobile phones, Nokia really pushes the boat out with the N70. Similar in design to its older brother, with a larger screen allowing for better resolution pictures and movies, it’s another wonderful endorsement of Nokia’s design engineers. With an impressive 32 MB of RAM via the memory card as well as 22 MB of built-in memory on the phone itself, it more than allows you to store your favorite video clips or MP3 files. Yet the features don’t stop there, although coming from the innovative Nokia, that’s to be expected. Although not up there with specialist digital cameras, the N70’s 2 mega pixel camera still allows for impressive pictures to be taken, especially since the phone has a built-in flash as well. It is also one of Nokia’s first mobile phones to allow video calling, with its 3G functionality adding to an already impressive little device. Like any good mobile phone, it doesn’t skimp in the audio department either. Combining MP3 with an FM Radio tuner, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the quality of sound when listening through the supplied headphones. Yet as enjoyable as the N70 is as a simple mobile phone, it also offers professional businessmen a valid tool, with its built-in Quickoffice Office Suite software, which allows you to use it as a mini-organizer with calendar and meeting reminders, not to mention email facilities. Once again, Nokia proves it’s the leader in the field of mobile phones. With its whole N-series of phones, it raises the bar for what a mobile phone should offer the user, and the wonderful little N70 is the perfect example of this.

Samsung G800 – Fortus Mobile Phone Review
Raising the Standards in Mobile Imaging The latest addition to the small, but growing, group of 5 megapixel camera phones is the stylish Samsung G800. While this amazing slide phone wasn’t the first with a 5 megapixel camera, the G800 is the first mobile phone to include an optical zoom with such a high quality camera. This Samsung masterpiece is also one of the best looking high quality camera phones currently available. The latest imaging technology can not yet be packaged into an ultra-slim, super lightweight casing, but the Samsung G800 is comfortable to hold and is an ideal size for taking pictures. The shiny, silver casing is subtle, but sleek, and the G800 sports a trendy slider design. The full colour display screen takes up most of the phone’s face, measuring 2.4 inches, and is perfect for viewing the incredible pictures captured with the phone’s camera. A simple navigation pad is located at the bottom of the screen, along with two soft keys and the call buttons. The Samsung marvel slides open to display a typical flat, slider-style keypad. The top row of buttons may be more difficult to access, but the other keys may be more easily distinguished than the buttons of many smaller handsets. Turn the G800 over and the handset transforms into a digital camera, quite similar and comparable to a dedicated camera. The 5 megapixel camera is the most appealing feature of this stylish slider and there is no doubt why. The Samsung G800 is currently the premier camera phone and could seriously rival some of this year’s hottest handsets, including the iPhone. Not only does the G800 take digital camera style photographs that can be printed on your Pictbridge compatible printer directly from the handset, it also features a number of features previously only found on standalone cameras, like Wide Dynamic Range and face detection. This camera phone also boasts a user-friendly camera-like interface that is a first for mobile phones. The Samsung G800 takes both pictures and videos and features integrated editing software for both. The optical zoom feature pushes the G800 ahead of the competition and the power of a real Xenon flash ensures perfect shots day and night. The music player and integrated, stereo FM radio are just as impressive, supporting all common formats and providing high quality sound. The G800 is an all-around good mobile phone. The internal memory is more than many handsets, at 160 MB, and a memory card slot allows unlimited storage for your favourite songs, pictures, and games. The Samsung G800 supports most types of messaging, including email attachments, and features 3G connectivity as well as Bluetooth. Unfortunately, wi-fi connectivity was forgotten. Besides the lack of wi-fi and the somewhat bulky size, the G800 is a stylish phone that is paving the road for camera phone technology. The Samsung G800 may just earn the recognition of this year’s most magnificent mobile phone. It’s difficult to follow up on the successful U600 and G600, but Samsung has done it successfully and can consider the G800 to be another feather in its cap.

Viewty LG KU990 – Better Than The iPhone?
With all the hype of the current release of the Apple iPhone you would be forgiven for not being familiar with LG’s latest offering, the LG KU990 Viewty. As with the iPhone handset the Viewty allows you to navigate its menus and features with the touch of a finger. But LG have added a few features to the Viewty that the iPhone is sorely missing. Could this touch screen technology underdog really be better than the iPhone? The LG KU990 Viewty is equipped with a 5-megapixel camera including a xenon flash and auto focus which puts Apple iPhone’s 2-megapixal offering to shame. The camera can also be switched to capture high speed motion footage and includes a unique feature that allows you to watch the video replay in slow motion. Combine this with the option to automatically upload to YouTube and you can plainly see why the Viewty is genuine competition for the iPhone. The Viewty allows you to browse the Internet through a fast GPRS or 3G Internet connection with an innovative web browser that allows you to zoom in on areas of web pages and then use your finger to drag the page across the screen. This function is useful as the handset screen is small and trying to read a full webpage without the zoom would be almost impossible. Surprisingly the Viewty is missing a Wi-Fi option, a feature which has become very popular and almost a ‘must have’ on new mobile phones as Internet browsing becomes more popular. The onboard 170MB memory is generous but the microSD memory can only be expanded to 2GB which is really poor when you consider that the Viewty is going to be used for capturing high quality photographs and video. In comparison with the iPhone’s standard 8GB the Viewty falls short by a long way. The onscreen buttons and menus are easy to navigate and the photo gallery neatly allows you to drag and drop photos as if you were shuffling through a bunch of photographs laid out on a table. As with the iPhone there are some traditional buttons located under the screen that allow you to quickly answer calls or direct you to the main menu. There is also a selection of buttons on the side of the handset which allow easy use of the camera options. At 103.5 x 54.4 x 14.8 mm the Viewty handset is smaller than the iPhone but slightly thicker. The battery life is good for a regular phone but with the other technologies included it will be necessary to regularly recharge especially if you have set the phone to vibrate each time you select a button on the touch screen. In conclusion the Viewty is not just a clone of the iPhone. Yes the iPhone will be a lot more popular and will sell many more units due to a frantic advertising campaign and brand awareness. Yes the iPhone does look beautiful and operate a lot slicker than the Viewty. Yes the Viewty is missing Wi-Fi, but there are a few features that will help the Viewty compete with the iPhone. It has a far superior camera which includes video capture, the Viewty is open to networks other than O2 and the handset costs are likely to be significantly less than the Apple iPhone. The Viewty is kind of like the footballer playing for a small team who scores a spectacular goal but is overshadowed in the media by the big team player’s strike.

Samsung U700 – Martin’s Quick Review
More Than Meets The Eye At first glance, you could be fooled into thinking that the Samsung U700, also known as the Samsung Ultra 12.1, is just another fashion phone which is big on glitz and sparing with functionality. But you’d be wrong, because the slender, glossy slider phone from Samsung has excellent functions which will satisfy users long after the shiny surface gets scratched. Excellent build quality supplements the sleek lines of the Samsung U700. The sliding mechanism is sprung, meaning you need only to push the phone halfway before it opens itself completely. The most noticeable feature of the closed phone is the circular navigation button. Four directions and a central confirmation button lend simplicity to browsing your phone book, messages or web sites. Samsung has also incorporated touch sensitive keys beneath the U700’s display, which react to gentle pressure from the fingers. These buttons are automatically locked during calls. Opening up the phone reveals a standard keypad, whose 12 keys are plastic-covered and back lit. Although the keys are not fully separated, they are large enough to use easily. The Samsung U700 sports a 262K colour display, with QVGA (240 x 320 pixels) resolution. Unfortunately the vibrant colours and brightness levels are lost in twilight, artificial light or on cloudy days because the phone’s front plate is so glossy. You will be able to configure your own display, and the user-friendly menu system is similar to older editions of the phone. Other notable features of the Samsung U700 are its 3.2 megapixel main camera with autofocus and macro mode. Images are sharp with little noise, and results are good even in low light. Whilst the phone allows video recording, the format is out-dated (QCIF) and low resolution. The phone also has a second camera which is used for video-conferencing. Storage is on microSD memory cards, so there is plenty of space for your photos, videos and your music. The in-built music player is reliable and can store your music by album or by artist. Music can be downloaded using a memory card reader, or through direct connection with your PC. A downside of the entertainment component of the phone is the absence of a universal headphone jack and FM radio. Much credit is due to Samsung for the U700’s incredible download speed over UMTS + HSDPA: up to 3.6 Mbits/second. If your provider doesn’t support HSDPA, the phone is also speedy on GPRS too. You will notice the phone synchronizes seamlessly with Outlook and Outlook Express, meaning that out-of-office checking of your email is hassle-free. The phone uses NetFront 3.4 for internet browsing, and is able to resize complicated websites for better display on smaller screens. An RSS reader also comes standard with the web browser. The Samsung U700’s glossy exterior (which may become easily smudged or scratched) belies a feature-packed, super-functional interior. Despite a few small oversights, this phone should satisfy even the choosiest of customers who look for a phone that satisfies the criteria of both form and function.

Lg Ke800 Chocolate Platinum – Martin’s Quick Review
Not satisfied with the success of the KG800, also known as the Chocolate, LG had to try and go one better. They succeeded when they announced the Chocolate Platinum/II, also known as the LG KE800. You get the same basic features as the Chocolate provides but with a few extra twists to enhance your phone user experience. The KE800 picks up where the KG800 left off, with the same touch sensitive keypad and great functionality. I have to say that I am not a fan of the former. It is difficult to get used to either model when it is so easy to misdial, mistext and set off on a journey navigating through the entire menu without realising. However, LG have learned from the feedback they received from Chocolate customers and built a bigger and better version that shows exactly whet the brand can do. The KE800 looks similar to the Chocolate, with the same slider and simplistic colour combination of grey, black and red. It does have a new outer casing though, and this one doesn’t pick up as many fingerprints as its predecessor. The navigation is just as easy and the menu is virtually a carbon copy of the Chocolate’s. However, the features in that menu are new and improved. The camera is 2MP and delivers excellent images thanks to the useful auto focus that LG have incorporate to make taking photos less time consuming and more spontaneous. The KG800 gave you the choice of resolution and quality, but that is not necessary with the KE800 because the phone does the work for you. You can store plenty of images on the KE800’s 256MB memory, which can also be supplemented with a memory expansion card. This model actually has a slot for it! The memory is excellent in itself for such a small phone, but the card option takes it to another level. You are also given a further sound option with the KE800 because it has FM radio, something that the Chocolate surprisingly lacked. It has great digital capabilities in MP3, WAV and AAC software, which make it a great phone for music lovers. The sound quality, dare I say it, also appears to be slightly better. If you liked the KG800 Chocolate, the chances are that you will love the KE800 even more. There are less niggles that apply to the phone on the whole simply because it is bigger and better LG have learnt from their mistakes and this phone is the better for it.
